Much Ado about Villains

Much Ado about Villains

For this production the script for Much Ado About Nothing has remained largely intact, with one derivation: the role of Don John (our villain) has switched genders. The crux of Don John’s malice is he is an illegitimate son and will not inherit the title or status that his brother Don Pedro has received. As a female, illegitimate or otherwise, our Doña Giovanna would also be passed over for a male heir for a title or inheritance during this time in history. This allows for our villainess to be driven by the exact same motives as Shakespeare’s original male character, and gives us the opportunity to cast another of The Baron’s Men talented actresses, Leanna Holmquist, in an exciting and challenging role.
