The Dead of Winter is an original script written by Aaron Niemuth and Laura Trezise. It’s an Elizabethan murder mystery utilizing the classic ‘trapped with an unknown killer’ scenario. There’s an engagement party at a remote Keep, and a snowstorm sets in. Many guests flee the party ahead of the storm, but not everyone is able to leave in time and must remain in the Keep until the storm subsides. Suddenly, a scream rings through the Keep – the charming and bold Constance Claybourne has been killed! As the story unfolds and we learn more about how Constance is connected to those trapped together, the question goes from “why was she killed” to “how in the world has she managed to remain alive so long?” There are some twists, some turns and plenty of suspects… not to mention THREE DIFFERENT KILLERS! Yep, we’ll be performing the three different endings on a rotating schedule, so you should come out and see them all!
So the journey of where my partnership with Laura came from really started in the devious, warped, twisted, deranged (where’s my thesaurus – ok there we go) unbalanced, unhinged (you get the point) mind of Laura Trezise. Once upon a time, Laura had a notion, hey maybe TBM should do something involving Robin Hood! Being the brazen fool she is, when bids for the 2014 season were requested, she approached the Board of Directors with an idea – ‘hey I wanna do something about Robin Hood. I read this old ballad once, maybe that could be a thing… full concept and script to be developed!’. After that, a bunch of things happened (which I assume involved bribery, blackmail, bribery, possibly also bribery), the board said yeah go do that. Suddenly Laura had a show! I can only imagine what was going through her mind when she heard the news – “HURRAY! I have a show. Wait… I have a show? I need a plan… and a script… and… and… ODG what have I done??!”.
Fast forward a few months, to one late night after one of our performances of The Spanish Tragedie, Laura and I were having a chat in the parking lot after the dedicated many who had helped close down the show that night had already (and wisely) departed. I asked about her Robin Hood show and how the script was coming along. A somewhat manic look crossed her face and she gave one of those rare and frightening “it’s FINE, I’m not crazy YOU’RE THE ONE WHO’S CRAZY!” laughs, starting twitching and replied “Script? What script? I don’t know anything about a script. I’m calm. I’m TOTALLY calm. I’m NOT STRESSED! I’M NOT PULLING MY HAIR OUT! HEHE! HAHA! AHAHAHAHA!” I idly mentioned (as I was casually backing away towards safety, fearing to startle the crazy woman) that I had some experience in scriptwriting in the past. An expression of what I assumed was desperate gratitude (but was probably actually resigned disgust) then crossed her face. Fast forward again and I found myself stuck with, erm partnering with Laura in drafting the script for A Tale of Robyn Hoode, and co-directed it with her in the Fall of 2014. If you were onstage, behind the stage, in the house or in the audience, you know how much fun that show was!
Having NOT learned our lesson, here we are again: another show (this one born out of MY deranged brain), another script, many more “ODG what have I/we done” panic attacks, etc. So – unless Laura’s crazy is contagious and I’m dreaming this from inside my padded cell, this is a thing that’s actually happening. Whodathunkit?
As we all know, our shows take a group effort. If you aren’t able to be with us as part of our cast or crew, you can still be a part of The Dead of Winter! Our Front of House is being managed by Carrie Casey – for those wishing to volunteer (and we dearly hope that you do), you can reach out to Carrie at email@example.com to arrange a date and time to come help out! Come have fun with us!
